CISM
International Military Sport Council
The Conseil international du sport militaire or CISM is originally a French initiative, a venture driven by a French Major, CBA DEBRUS, who had the idea, just after the World War II, to make armies meet on the sports fieldinstead of on the battlefield. Five countries (France, Luxemburg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark) decided to put this idea into practice by laying the foundations of this council on the 18th February 1948 in Nice, under the motto of "Friendship through sport".
Today, 140 countries meet every year in numerous continental and world championships and every four years at the World Military Summer and Winter Games, which respectively take place one year before the Olympic Games. One can draw the parallel to the military equivalent of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
CNSD
The National Defense Sports Centre
The Centre national des sports de la défense (CNSD) is a joint forces organization under the authority of the Chief of Staff of the Army. The commanding officer of the CNSD also serves as the Commissioner for Military Sports.
The mission of the CNSD is to implement the Ministry of the Armed Forces’sports policy. As the guarantor of the operational readiness of military personnel, the CNSD's mission, at the ministerial level, is to:
-to design, lead, evaluate and conduct studies on the practice of physical, military and sports activities in the armed forces;
-to participate in the elaboration of the general regulation of military sports;
-organizing and coordinating military equestrian sports activities;
-organizing and implementing training in the field of "military physical training and sports" (EPMS) and the "equestrian sports" field.
In conjunction with other ministries, the CNSD develops sports for all and thus promotes the "Army/Nation" link. It manages the High Level Sportsmen and Women (SHND) placed under the responsibility of the Military Sports Commissioner within a team called "Army of Champions".
In liaison with the three branches of service and the national gendarmerie, the CNSD also organizes national military championships and international military meetings in individual and team sports. It participates in foreign military sports bodies (such as CISM) and contributes to France's reputation by promoting the Ministry of the Armed Forces' military sports policy.
The CNSD contributes to the reconstruction of injured military personnel through sport. In this respect, it carries out training activities for armed forces personnel in contact with injured soldiers and participates in military "injury and sports" meetings. It also organizes physical preparation courses for injured military personnel participating in national and international competitions.
